King or Not? (November 22) 2009-11-16 by John Roberts Submit a Question | Submit an Article This scripture is a small part of the great drama of the 18th chapter and should be studied altogether. In this drama I feel that Pilate is the one on trial. He asked Jesus if he was a King and Jesus said I'm not King of anything you can see. This was a concept that Pilate could not grasp and Jesus' accusers could not grasp and asks the following question. Do we understand that Jesus' kingdom is something we can not see? Maybe it is a concept that we can't grasp either. Kingship & Truth (November 22) 2009-11-15 by Peggy Dillner Submit a Question | Submit an Article Kingship? Is this a concept about which 21st century folks feel comfortable? What is meant by kingship by both Pilate and Jesus? Jesus' response includes "to bear witness to the truth. Everyone who is of the truth hears my voice." That is where this lectionary ends although the scripture has Pilate asking the important unanswered question, "What is truth?" Ah, the challenge to preachers is defining kingship and truth...! Good luck. (and it's John!!) I'm a congregant with no answers and LOTS of questions.
Apocalypse Now (November 15) 2009-11-11 by Peggy Dillner Submit a Question | Submit an Article I've been "lurking" for a couple months and need to step up to commenting. This passage can be quite troubling to congregants, I believe, taken simply as it. To be considered is the audience the writer was addressing and the point Jesus may have been making - somewhat integrated questions. Were not these folks expecting a return of Jesus? The words resound differently read with an expected demise and read in 2009. While we have terrible wars around the world, people know they have come and gone over the years without the world ending. Another issue to be addressed are verses 5 & 6 which seem "stuck in." Jesus response to their question about the destruction was an admonition to not follow false prophets. Does that really fit? As one who has helped students with writing, I would suggest to him/her that was a different topic. My comments are not very esoteric, but these are my questions.
Concerns of Today (November 15) 2009-11-11 by Winola Green Submit a Question | Submit an Article The main concern I have is with the message about beware of false leaders. How to discern? Even with the problems we have in this country with so much misunderstanding of separation of church and state. As for wars, earthquakes, famine, etc. those things have gone on since the beginning. Those will continue. And the temple destruction is of little concern. The idea that Jesus was maybe talking about his own body as the temple. has been diseucced a lot. However, the call to stay focused on Jesus and have knowledge to discern false teachers needs to be addressed. How to Be a Faith Defender --- For Dummies (Nov 15) 2009-11-11 by John Roberts Submit a Question | Submit an Article This is difficult scripture. Here is what I think American Christians need to know. Most American Christians have never been persecuted or harassed because of their faith. We are spoiled. We have enjoyed living where our faith was the expected norm in many cases. Most of us have never had to be a defender. Jesus says that it will not always be this way.How will we learn to defend our faith? We continue to consume our intellectual powers to argue the gender of our clergy, the day of the week for formal worship, which translation is "right", the gender of our lovers, whose prayer book is older, whose music is older and are pigs still cursed. When Jesus' prophecy comes true,we'll need to figure out what we have in common.
