A Divine Relationship (September 13)

This passage starts out as a ‘teaching’ moment with Jesus querying the disciples, but quickly turns as Jesus provides the ‘answers to the test,’ answers that must not have been what the disciples wanted to hear.

Jesus understands what his journey to the cross will entail, but is it because of his unwavering faithfulness to his father that he is able to continue?  Was his relationship with his father so full of love and trust that he even embraced this journey?  If so, is there anything in our human existence that even compares to that type of relationship?

When we think of “taking up our cross,” it always seems to be associated with suffering, or rejection, or even death, the things we try to avoid at all cost, yet they seem to be at the very heart of Jesus’ journey.

How can we discern God’s true will for the world without taking the same journey?

Jesus In Secret (September 6)

In Mark 7, Jesus goes where can't be found. In the verses about healing, he did not want to be seen ("He entered a house and did not want anyone to know he was there.").  The man who was deaf... Jesus takes him off by himself ("He took him aside in private, away from the crowd."). After the healings, Jesus ordered them to tell no one. Why all the secrecy? Listeners to your sermon might be curious.

Make sure that your listeners know that Jesus knew who he was and why he came. Some people today have this as a question...that Jesus didn't know who he was or his mission.

It occured to me that Jesus was traveling far from home to reach out to "outsiders" but even more he was away from home to teach his disciples who would soon hear him say things they did not want to hear. They knew what a Messiah was supposed to act like and he was showing them what they did not expect --  and we haven't learned the lesson either.

Where Is Today's Healing? (September 6)

While this passage certainly caused me some consternation concerning Jesus' put down of the Syrophoenician woman which seemed very unlike the inclusive Jesus who ate with tax collectors and prostitutes, I was more drawn to his act of healing her daughter despite the seeming put down. In this passage, it certainly seems as if "Ask and you shall receive" is alive and well.  The daughter is healed. The deaf man is healed. I would like to hear how this squares with almost everyone who sits in the pews today and asks, and asks, and asks, and yet doesn't seem to receive.
